Our second interactive contribution to the Letter.Box.Stamp.Collect. project is from poet Nathan Curnow with his poem Dreamfish. This poem appears in Nathan’s first collection No Other Life But This (Five Islands Press). Nathan describes his connection between the poem and the project:
I like to think of Dreamfish as a surreal little trip, a poem inside a poem like a fish inside a fish. It opens with a strange idea of dreaming in braille, moves into some kind of fish story and then moves out again with the final stanza – the act of stroking the forehead like a gentle trickle of water. My intention is for the poem to revolve so that when the reader comes to the end they discover it feeding right back into the start.
she is blind but I dream in braille
she touches every raised dot
revealing the story
a fish inside another fish
unaware that it’s been swallowed
eating everything the bigger fish is
choking on a fish bone
reminding it of something
it might have choked on before
I wake in the morning
she is stroking my forehead
like a gentle trickle of water
